Though there were people proclaiming 2011 to be “the year of the Linux tablet“, that proved to be a false prophecy. Setting aside the long wait for a Windows 8, we do have iOS, Android or “near-dead” WebOS tablets on the market now. So why isn’t there a proper Linux tablet available yet? With distros like Ubuntu upgrading their interfaces to have a more “touch” style than before, I would have expected one of these Linux households to work with a hardware manufacturer on such a device. Though there are rumors of “under development” products, we’re still to see a preview not to mention a fully operational prototype.
I, for one, would love to see Ubuntu’s Unity interface perform on a decent tablet hardware. Maybe 2012 will give users another alternative to the iPad, aside from the obvious Android copycats.
