How to Go From a Whisper to a Voice on X: A Casual Guide to Getting Started

How to Go From a Whisper to a Voice on X- A Casual Guide to Getting Started.jpeg

Alright, so you’ve just started on X (yeah, that’s “the artist formerly knows as Twitter”), and it kind of feels like you’re standing in the middle of a giant, echoing hallway.

You’re posting stuff, but no one’s around to see it. It’s awkward, almost discouraging.

But that’s, like, totally normal. And, honestly, getting past it is simpler than you might think — it just takes some patience and a plan.

Step One: Don’t Post Yet, Just Hang Out

Think of this phase as your time to chill and get a feel for things.

Right now, forget about tweeting into the void and focus on joining conversations already happening.

  1. Scout Out Cool Accounts Take some time to find people whose posts you enjoy. These could be folks you respect, accounts that make you laugh, or those sharing tips you actually find useful. Make a list of, let’s say, 10 to 15.

  2. Join the Comments Party Instead of throwing your thoughts into empty space, start replying to others. You don’t have to write essays — just toss in something like, “Hey, I tried this too, and here’s what worked for me,” or “This reminds me of…” Pretty soon, you’ll notice people recognizing your name in the thread.

  3. Stick Around Their Circle Here’s the fun part: once you’re replying consistently, you’ll start spotting regulars in those same comment sections. That’s where you can start connecting with more people who share your vibe.

Step Two: Use the Tools to Stay in the Loop

Alright, so here’s a little hack for keeping up without losing your mind. Platforms like TweetDeck (free!) let you track accounts in neat columns.

Want an easier way? Turn on post notifications for your top picks, but tweak the settings so it doesn’t buzz you nonstop.

It’s a lightweight way to stay updated.

Step Three: Build a Mini Habit

Spend 10 to 20 minutes a day poking around and dropping thoughtful comments.

Honestly, even a simple, “This is such a great perspective” can go a long way if it’s sincere. The trick is showing up often enough that people start noticing you’re there.

Step Four: Share Something Worth Reading

Ok, now that you’ve warmed up in the replies, it’s time to give your timeline some life.

You don’t need a viral blueprint or anything. Instead, think about stuff in your daily life that might make someone pause and go, “Huh, that’s interesting.”

• For example: Did you finally figure out how to set up a business account? Share the steps, plus the one thing that caught you off guard.

• Or, if you’re working on a side hustle, talk about what’s working and what’s a total mess. People love a good behind-the-scenes moment.

Be Real, but Keep It Comfortable

Here’s the thing: you don’t have to share everything. If talking about money feels weird, skip it. If family updates aren’t your thing, that’s fine too. Authenticity doesn’t mean you need to overshare — it’s more about being honest with what you do put out there.

Step Five: Give Before You Ask

The golden rule here? Share stuff people actually care about before you ask for their attention.

That could mean tips, funny moments, or even just relatable stories.

Keep the “asks” (like promoting your project) for later, when people already know and trust you.

A Quick Reality Check

This isn’t some overnight magic trick. Building up a presence takes time.

But, at the end of the day, showing up consistently and giving people something worth stopping for? That’s how you go from posting into the void to being part of the conversation.

And, really, isn’t that what we’re all here for?

Some context first: there’s a great community out there called Small Bets, “a support network ready to help you get your first small wins”. As a member of Small Bets, I’m learning as much as I can and always try to improve using the knowledge from the series of webinars hosted for members. So what I’m trying in this article is to distill the information I’ve learned, firstly for me, to help me remember and implement, but also for anyone who might be interested in this topic. The webinar I’ve drawn knowledge from here is called “Emerging from the Void on X”. Obviously, if you want the full experience, I encourage you to sign-up to Small Bets and watch the webinar for yourself, you won’t regret it. Enjoy!
